What image of Jesus do you have? The Roman Catholic image of Jesus? Or is it the Hollywood image of Jesus? The Jesus the movie makers promote? Or the homosexual Jesus? The transsexual Jesus? Or the Mary Magdeline- romantically-involved Jesus? The media Jesus? The home-boy Jesus? Or baby Jesus? What mental picture of Jesus do you have?

Let’s contrast Exodus 20:3-5
to the so-called pictures of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Exodus 20:3-5
You shall have no other gods before me. 4)You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth, beneath or in the water under the earth. 5) You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and forth generation of those who hate Me.

I recognize the old covenant is out.
This issue has to do with the nature of God, which does not change.

Those who hate God make false images of things in heaven and
worship them. Exodus 20: 3-5

Jesus is in heaven and people worship Him.

What images of Jesus do they worship?

Inaccurate “Pictures of the Lord Jesus Christ” .

Pictures of the Lord Jesus Christ are false images of God!

A white-faced, blue-eyed, long-haired Jesus is the American dream.

I believe these images will turn out to be many people’s eternal nightmare!

People do not need a false image of Jesus to worship.

1 Corinthians 11:24-25 is exactly how Jesus wants us to remember Him.

1 Corinthians 11:24-25
And when He had given thanks, He broke it, and said, “This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 25) In the same way He took the cup also, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

1 Corinthians 5:16
Therefore from now on we recognize no man according to the flesh; even though we have known Christ, according to the flesh, yet now we know Him thus no longer.

The Hebrew word “idols” means, “Good for nothing, vain or vanity, no value, thing of nought.”

The Hebrew word for “image” means, “To shape, resemblance, vain image, a representative figure, especially an idol.”

Today...false images of Jesus are...

Big Business!

The Seriousness of False Images and Likeness of God:

Deuteronomy 7:25-26
The graven images of their gods shall ye burn with fire: thou shalt not desire the silver or gold that is on them, nor take it unto thee, lest thou be snared therein: for it is an abomination to the LORD thy God. 26) Neither shalt thou bring an abomination into thine house, lest thou be a cursed thing like it: but thou shalt utterly detest it, and thou shalt utterly abhor it; for it is a cursed thing.

Exodus 34:12-14
Take heed to thyself, lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land whither thou goest, lest it be for a snare in the midst of thee: 13) But ye shall destroy their altars, break their images, and cut down their groves: 14) For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God:

Some will say it’s appropriate to have these false images of the Lord Jesus Christ because they don’t mean anything to people.

I ask the question, what if a pastor were to start a church with some false image of Jesus that had more of an Eastern Buddha look to it? How would that go over? He would be in big trouble with the Christian churchmen. I think those same churchmen that say that the pictures of Jesus don’t mean anything to them would be the first to call the pastor’s church a cult of some kind. The reason is that they worship the false images of Jesus (God).

Worship
is to have a reverential attitude and feeling of awe, homage, honor in thought or act paid to men, angels, or other spiritual beings. Figuratively, this is toward other entities, ideas, powers or qualities, but specifically and supremely to deity.

Exodus 20:5
“You shall not worship them.” (False idols and images).

What do people do with so-called likenesses of Jesus.

Bow down to..... kiss..... put in wallets..... hold as sacred..... make them into jewelry..... make Him into holy charms..... place as a form of holy protection... use to make places holy... create reverent atmospheres... home decoration...

Telling a black child that his God is the white-faced
blue-eyed Jesus is telling him a lie.
Telling a white child the same is also a lie.

Matthew 18:6
But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it is better for him that a heavy millstone be hung around his neck, and that he be drowned in the depth of the sea.

Many so-called false likenesses of Jesus Christ are the product of the Roman Catholic Church and some very ungodly people.

It should be pointed out that the cults promote these false images of God
as well as the god of this world. The devil loves to degrade the one and only real God within the minds of people.

2 Corinthians 4:4
In whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving, that they might not see the light of the Gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

Note: Jesus arose from the dead and no one knows what Jesus looked like before or after. We have no early pictures of Jesus. It’s hundreds of years after His resurrection that they dreamed up all the false images of the Lord Jesus Christ.

God instructed His people to make a likeness of angels for the temple.

Likeness of angels were done under God’s direction. It did not violate the first commandment which was binding on God’s people, not God.

This instance in the Bible does not open the door to violate what God’s holy nature rejects.

As for me, I try to keep away from idols.

Many good Christian people wrongly use these false images of God with good intentions; so this is just a friendly warning.

Burn them!!!

I once went to a church that had a mural of the Lord’s supper behind the pulpit. After the service I asked to speak with the pastor. He agreed. Prudentially, I asked if he would look at the mural and tell me who that was sitting at the head of the table? He quickly replied, “Jesus!”

I then asked who Jesus was. He said, “Well He’s the Savior that died for mankind’s sins.”

I asked, “Is that it?”

He said, “No, Jesus is God. You see man’s sins were against God. So He came down to earth to provide a sacrifice for man’s sins against Him. He paid the price for our sins.”

I then asked, “Is that a true image of God or a false image of God sitting at the head of the table?”

He thought for a while and said, “Well, I guess I would have to say it’s a false image of God.”

I then asked, “Why would you want a false image of God in your church?”

The next week I returned back to the church to find the mural had been taken down. I thought to myself, “Well, this just might be the church for me.” Honestly, I was very impressed with the pastor.

The next week I returned to the church to find the mural was back up. After church I approached the pastor once again and asked him why the mural was back up? He told me that he agreed with me, but the church board made him put it back up. I thought a bit and carefully said, “I sure would like to talk to your board.”

He said, “Would you?”

I said, “Of course.”

About a week later they had a church meeting. The board with the members attended. Respectfully, I made the presentation; the following week the mural was taken down and to this day has never been put back up.

Praise the Lord!

So there is hope through proper education.

Many traditions have passed through the centuries
and are accepted as the norm.

The question is what do we love the most:
traditions or Biblical truth?

Mark 7:6-8
And He said to them, “Rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written,‘This people honors Me with their lips, But their heart is far away from Me.
7)’But in vain do they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the precepts of men.’8) “Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the tradition of men.”

Matthew 15:3
And He answered and said to them, “And why do you yourselves transgress the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?
