God Loves #1

Who Told You God Loves You?

The Sin And The Sinner Go Straight To Hell Together.

God Really Loves You!
{Unless You Are Esau}

“God Hates All Workers Of Iniquity”
Psalms 5:5

JOHN R. RICE, Evangelist:
Under the fires of criticism that every true preacher faces, he must choose one of three courses. He can compromise, soft pedal, use smoother words; say not so much about sin and repentance and judgment, and thus continue in the ministry without the continual harassment that was the lot of such prophets of God as Jeremiah, Elijah and Paul. Or a preacher may resign himself, as the best Bible preachers did, to suffer malice, reproach and ridicule of wicked
sinners and worldly church men, and continue to faithfully preach. The third course open is to leave the ministry, and hundreds of preachers have done it, not having the fortitude to face continual opposition, and yet with too much conscience and honesty to compromise Christ and dilute His message.
The Soul-Winner’s Fire, pp. 48-49

It is the first principle of the gospel to know for certainty the character of God. Far too often both groups and individuals such as those at homosexual marches, abortion demonstrations, cultic-religious groups, and non-religious humanitarian groups are found holding signs with slogans such as, “Jesus Loves Me This I Know, For The Bible Tells Me So,” “God Loves Me,” “Nothing Can Separate Us From The Love God.”

The purpose of this paper is to inform people that this simply is not true. If I tell an unsaved, unrepentant person that God personally loves him when he does not it becomes a serious crime against the very character of God Himself. We believe that this offense is committed by most Christian people on a regular basis to the non-Christian world. It is my hope that this section will put and end to this terrible, horrible, misrepresentation of the character of God.

Jeremiah 8:8
“How can you say, ‘We are wise, and the law of the LORD is with us’? But behold, the lying pen of the scribes has made {it} into a lie.

Jeremiah 9:23-24
Thus says the LORD, “Let not a wise man boast of his wisdom, and let not the mighty man boast of his might, let not a rich man boast of his riches; 24)but let him who boast of this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who exercises lovingkindness, justice, and righteousness on earth; for I delight in these things,” declares the LORD.

JOSH MCDOWELL,
Another of the frequent accusations against the Bible is that it contains two different concepts of God. The Old Testament allegedly presents only a God of wrath, while the New Testament allegedly depicts only a God of love. Answers to Tough Questions, p. 69

JOSH MCDOWELL answers this accusation:
We find judgment as well as love scattered very pervasively throughout the New Testament, and love and mercy as well as judgment throughout the Old Testament. God is consistent and unchanging... IBID., P. 70

DR. A. E. WILDER-SMITH, Professor of medicine holding three doctorate degrees, and author or co-author of over fifty publications:
...we ought never dare to state that there is a different God in the Old Testament to the One revealed in the New, on the basis that the Old Testament reveals a God of judgment and the New Testament a God of love. Love and judgment are present in both Testaments. Man’s Origin, Man’s Destiny (1974), p. 179

MALACHI 3:6
For I Am The Lord, I Change Not

HEBREWS 13:8
Jesus Christ Is The Same Yesterday And Today, Yes And Forever

THE PROBLEM:
DR. R. C. SPROUL, Director of Ligonier Valley Study Center, and author of several books:
The attempt to circumvent the sovereignty of God and be free of guilt takes subtle forms. Not everyone forcefully denies the existence of God. Rather God’s nature is reshaped into a deity whose only attribute is love. God is stripped of His justice and sovereignty; he is left clad only with a maudlin kind of love wrath, that makes no demands. This kind of God requires no repentance, but exhibits a kind of love that means “never having to say that you are sorry.” This Stripped, Weak, Helpless God Is The God Of A Very Popular American Religion, But It Is Not Christianity. Objections Answered (1978), p. 72

QUESTION: What is God’s character really like regarding unrepentant sinners?

WRONG:
God loves the sinner but hates the sin.

RIGHT:
God sends both the sinner and his sin to Hell.
Note: If God separates the sin from the sinner; why doesn’t God throw the sin into hell and let the sinner into heaven? The Bible clearly shows these two to be inseparable, apart from redemption.

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY?
Isaiah 1:28 and 31
But transgressors and sinners will be crushed together, and those who
forsake the LORD shall come to an end. 31) And the strong man will become tinder, His work also a spark. Thus they shall both burn together, and there will be none to quench {them}

Psalms 5:5 The boastful shall not stand before Thine eyes; Thou dost hate all who do iniquity.

Proverbs 6:16-19
There are six things which the LORD hates, yes, seven which are an abomination to Him: 17) Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, 18) A heart that devises wicked plans, feet that run rapidly to evil, 19) A false witness {who} utters lies, and one who spreads strife among brothers.

Psalms 11:5-6
The LORD trieth the righteous: but the wicked and him that loveth violence his soul hateth. 6 Upon the wicked he shall rain snares, fire and brimstone, and an horrible tempest: this shall be the portion of their cup.

Malachi 1:3
but I have hated Esau, and I have made his mountains a desolation, and {appointed} his inheritance for the jackals of the wilderness.”

Romans 9:13
Just as it is written, “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.”

Mark 9:43- 48
And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: 44) Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. 45) And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: 46) Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. 47) And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire: 48) Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

Hosea 9:15
All their wickedness is in Gilgal: for there I hated them: for the wickedness of their doings I will drive them out of mine house, I will love them no more: all their princes are revolters.

Deuteronomy 32:41-42
If I sharpen My flashing sword, and My hand takes hold on justice, I will render vengeance on My adversaries, and I will repay those who hate me. 42) ‘I will make My arrows drunk with blood, and My sword shall devour flesh, with the blood of the slain and the captives, from the long-haired leaders of the enemy.’

II Thessalonians 1:7-9
and {to give} relief to you who are afflicted and to us as well when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire, 8) dealing out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 9) And these will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power,

Psalms 7:11-13
God is a righteous judge, and a God who has indignation every day. 12 If a man does not repent, He will sharpen His sword; He has bent His bow and made it ready. 13 He has also prepared for himself deadly weapons; He makes His arrows fiery shafts.

Psalms 68:21-23
Surely God will shatter the head of His enemies, the hairy crown of him who goes on in his guilty deeds. 22) The Lord said, “I will bring {them} back from Bashan. I will bring {them} back from the depths of the sea;
23) That your foot may shatter {them} in blood, the tongue of your dogs {may have} its portion from {your} enemies.”

I Peter 2:7-8
This precious value, then, is for you who believe. But for those who disbelieve, “The stone which the builders rejected, this became the very corner {stone,} 8) and, “A stone of stumbling and a rock of offense”; for they stumble because they are disobedient to the word, and to this {doom} they were also appointed.

Matthew 21:44
”And he who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; but on whomever it falls, it will scatter him like dust.”

Revelation 14:9-11
And another angel, a third one, followed them, saying with a loud voice, “If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives a mark on his forehead or upon his hand, 10) he also will drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is mixed in full strength in the cup of His anger; and he will be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. 11) “And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever; and they have no rest day and night, those who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name.”

God’s attitude towards those he destroys:

Deuteronomy 28:63
“And it shall come about that as the LORD delighted over you to prosper you, and multiply you, so the LORD will delight over you to make you perish and destroy you; and you shall be torn from the land where you are entering to possess it.

Psalms 37:12-13
The wicked plots against the righteous, and gnashes at him with his teeth. 13 The Lord laughs at him; for He sees his day is coming.

Psalms 2:4-5
He who sits in the heavens laughs, the Lord scoffs at them. 5 Then He will speak to them in His anger and terrify them in His fury:

Proverbs 1:26-28
I will even laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your dread comes, 27) When your dread comes like a storm, and your calamity comes on like a whirlwind, when distress {and} anguish come on you. 28) “Then they will call on me, but I will not answer; they will seek me diligently, but they shall not find me,

God can only take pleasure in that which is in conformity to His Holy Nature. Judgment on unrepentant men is in conformity with the Royal Law. For example, a righteous judge can go home with a smile on his face because he has executed fair and just judgment in the courts.

The Historical Position Of The Church As Revealed By It’s Representatives:

MARTIN LUTHER, German theologian and Reformation leader:
Hence...at this point...the Holy spirit hates it, and this is indeed an ominous hatred. Thus the Psalm also states:
”I hate them with perfect hatred.” (139:22). When the Holy Spirit begins to hate and to be angry, eternal death follows.
Luther’s Works, Vol. 2, p. 174

J. VERNON MCGEE, World renown radio broadcaster:
”But the wicked and him that loveth violence His soul hateth.” If you think God is just lovey-dovey, you had better read this (Ps. 11:5) and some of the other Psalms again.

God hates the wicked who hold on to their wickedness.

I don’t think God loves the devil. I think God hates him, and He hates those who have no intention of turning to God. Frankly I do not like this distinction that I hear today that, “God loves you who persist in your sin, and continue in that sin, you are the enemy of God. And God is your enemy.

LAYMAN’S BIBLE COMMENTARY, a concise workable
commentary for laymen:
God’s Hatred of Evildoers (Psalms 5:4-5)...God is not said to love the sinner and hate his sin; he is said to hath both the sinner and his sin. This sounds harsh to modern Christian ears, but there is truth here we dare not overlook. Arnold B. Rhodes, pp. 32-33

LEWIS SPERRY CHAFER, Founder of Dallas Theological Seminary:
As certainly as God’s own love passes through His child when filled with the Spirit, so certainly that love will continue to be directed toward its own objects and the Christian thus blessed will love what God loves and hate what God hates. Systematic Theology, Vol. 6, p. 203

JOHN WESLEY (1703-1791), English clergyman; founder of Methodism:But as for the wicked, God hates them, and will feverishly punish them. Explanatory Notes upon the Old Testament, Vol. 2, p. 1639

WILLIAM GURNALL, Bible expositor:
...may, not only the work, but the worker also of iniquity becomes the object of His hatred.
Quoted in Spurgeon’s, The Treasury of David, Vol. 1, p. 57

MATTHEW HENRY, one of the most widely used Bible commentators over the past 250 years.
He is a holy God, and therefore hates them (the sinner), and cannot endure to look upon them; the wicked, and him that loveth violence, his soul hateth... Their prosperity is far from being an evidence of God’s love, that their abuse of it does certainly make them objects of His hatred. He hates nothing that He has made, yet hates those who have thus ill-made themselves. A commentary on the Holy Bible, Vol 3, p. 164

AUGUSTUS HOPKINS STRONG, Systematic Theologian:
There is no abstract sin that can be hated apart from the persons in whom that sin is represented and embodied... “It is the sinner who is punished, not the sin.” Systematic Theology, pp. 290-291

CHARLES F. PHEIFFR, Editor of the Wycliffe Bible Commentary:
God will not allow the foolish (lit. arrogant) to stand in His presence. He considers the workers of iniquity detestable. The end destined for those that speak lies (ASV) is utter destruction, and the blood-thirsty and the deceitful man (ASV) is an abomination that God abhors.
The Wycliffe Bible Commentary, p. 497

ABHOR
hate, dislike, detest, loathe, despise, abominate...colloq., can’t stand. Slang, get a pain (in the neck) from.
Roget’s College Thesaurus, p. 3

DONALD GREY BARNHOUSE, World renown expositor of the Bible:
Romans 1:28-31 - Haters of God. This is a word that is used only here in the Bible. It certainly does not mean that the hatred originates in the heart of men. That truth is taught elsewhere, for we read that “the carnal mind is enmity against God” (Rom. 8:7). The word here means “hateful to God.” It is so used in the classics by Euripides, for men who are so odious, so detestable, that God must have them. Man’s Ruin, God’s Wrath, p. 288

DAVID CLARKSON (B. D. 1621-1686), Bible expositor:
Those who the Lord hates must perish. But He hates impenitent sinners... What more due to impenitent sinners than hatred!...Will He entertain those in the bosom of love whom His soul hates?...As Christ hates iniquity, so the “workers of iniquity.”
Quoted in Spurgeon’s, The Treasury of David, Vol. 1, pp. 57-58

O. MICHEL, Greek Scholar in GERHARD KITTEL’S
THEOLOGICAL DICTIONARY OF THE NEW TESTAMENT:
God’s Hating. The OT concept of God includes the fact that God can and does hate...God is hostile both to the sinner and his sin. The deed is punished with the doer...Prov. 6:16-19 shows how the members of man (i.e. his anatomy) become an abomination to Yahweh, so that he must hate them.

MARTIN LUTHER, German Theologian, leader of the German
Reformation:
Furthermore, this iniquity (of man) is so bottomless that no one can ever understand its depth, and in Scripture, by the grace of God, not the iniquity but only the love of it is rebuked. Ps. 11:5 - “His soul hates him that loves iniquity.” Lectures On Romans, Vol. 25, p. 313

THE INTERNATIONAL CRITICAL COMMENTARY:
But the wicked His soul doth hate...Their treacherous preparations...are all observed by Yahweh, and he hates them from His very soul. The soul is the seat of the passion of anger and hatred, for God as well as for man..therefore, Yahweh is trying the righteous man, and hating his deadly enemies... C.A. Briggs, Psalms, Vol. 1, p. 91

J.F. BETHUNE-BAKER, Bible expositor:
Of the comparatively few cases in which the word (hate) is used in a good sense, the allusion is in half the number (of times) to the divine of evil and sin, God being represented as personally hating evil persons or things either directly or through his chosen spokesman.
James Hastings, editor, A Dictionary of the Bible, Vol. 2, p. 308

ALBERT BARNES, Bible expositor:
Psalms 11;5 - ....His soul hateth...The meaning is that all such persons were the objects of the Divine abhorrence, and the Divine dealings with them were not, as with the righteous, to try the, but to punish and destroy them. Notes on the Old and New Testament, p. 298

JAMES ORR, Professor of Church History, Edinburge, quotes Schultz:
”The particular word love,” says Schultz, “is hardly ever applied to God (in the OT); and where it does occur in a late writer (Mal. 1:2), it denotes God’s special covenant love for Israel; and the reverse side of this is, of course, hatred of the hostile peoples.”
James Hastings, editor, A Dictionary of the Bible, Vol. 3, p. 154

AUGUSTINE (354-430), Bishop of Hippo in Northern Africa:
For it may be that God hates a person to a degree more mildly, as not to destroy him, but whom He destroys He hates the more exceedingly, by how much he punisheth more severely. Now he hateth all who work iniquity; but all who speak lies He also destroys.
Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers, Vol. 3, 462

DR. EDWARD J. YOUNG, the late distinguished Professor of Old Testament at Westminister Theological Seminary:
The sinner and not merely the sin is like a wearisome burden to God, a burden from which He will seek easement. The New International Commentary, The Book of Isaiah, Vol. 1, p. 93

F. DELITZSCH, German scholar, a comments on Psalms 5:5
Of such (sinners - “the foolish, and more especially foolish boasters:)...Such men Jehovah hates; for if He did not hate evil, His love would not be a holy love. Psalms, Vol. 5, p. 122

F. DELITZSCH, German scholar, comments on Psalms 11;5
And His soul hates (i.e. He hates him with all the energy of His perfectly and essentially holy nature) the evil-doer and him that delights in the violence of the strong towards the weak. And the more intense this hatred, the more fearful will be the judgments in which it bursts forth.
Psalms, Vol. 5, p. 189

JOHN CALVIN (1509-1564), French Protestant Reformer:
It is therefore declared that God hates those who are set upon the infliction of injuries, and upon doing mischief...He must be the enemy of the wicked, who wrong and are troublesome to others.
Psalms, Vol. 1, 165

F.V. FILSON, biblical scholar, comments on John 3:36
The wrath of God, the divine judgment, immediately and relentlessly rests on the unrepentant sinner who stubbornly rejects the offer of grace and life. There is no place for neutrality.
Quoted by Leon Morris, The Gospel According to John, p. 250

THE INTERPRETERS BIBLE:
In vs. 5 the verb trieth has as its object both the righteous and the wicked, and means no more than that the Lord watchfully observes them both and estimates them for what they are, hating the latter and untimely pouring His destruction on them.

THE PULPIT COMMENTARY, a thorough helpful guide in sermon preparation:
3. On the wicked. (1) He hates them; i.e. He disapproves their ways (vs. 5, Ps. 1:6).
(2) the time will come when that disapproval will be manifest (v. 6). Psalms, Vol. 8, p. 74

CHARLES HADDON SPURGEON, Bible expositor and Theologian:
Verse 5. - Note the singular opposition of the two sentences. God hates the wicked, and therefore in contrast He loves the righteous... The Treasury of David, Vol. 2, pp. 57-58

OLIVER B. GREENE, Director of the Gospel Hour, Inc. comments on John 3:18
”He that believeth not is condemned already.” Ministers should often use this statement as a text.
Unbelievers are condemned; they are condemned NOW; the wrath of God abides on you NOW...
One heartbeat is all that stands between the sinner and hell!
The Gospel According to John, pp. 169-170

OLIVER B. GREENE, commenting on John 3:36
Again, notice the present tense - abideth. The unbeliever is under the wrath of Almighty God now - not at death, not at the judgment, The wrath of God abides on him now. As long as he continues in unbelief, he will be under the curse of God’s broken Law...until he becomes a believer, the wrath of God hangs over him because he is unpardoned, unforgiven; sin is still in him and upon him. Spiritually speaking there are only two classes of people: sons of God and sons of the devil... In this day of liberalism and modernism many ministers never mention hell; they never speak of the wrath of God. (Yet) They (love to) preach the love of God, the Fatherhood of God, and the brotherhood of man... I would remind you that the hottest sermon ever preached on hell-fire was preached by the tender, loving, compassionate Son of God... the term “hell-fire” was not coined by some fanatical preacher. It was used first by the Lord Jesus. Preachers today need to cry aloud and spare not.
We need to warn sinners that the wrath of God abides on them, and that, “he that believeth not is condemned already.” IBID., PP. 193-195

THE BROADMAN BIBLE COMMENTARY:
Yahweh takes no pleasure in wickedness and does not dwell with evil (or evil man). Insolent, boasting people have no position at all in the presence of Yahweh, who hates all “doers of sin.”
Indeed, Yahweh will annihilate those who speak deception; he detests the man of bloody deeds and deceit. Vol, 4, p. 197

LEON MORRIS, Ph.D., Principal of Ridley College, Melbourne, Australia:
The “wrath of God” is a concept which is uncongenial to many modern students, and various devices are adopted to soften the expression or explain it away. This cannot be done, however, without doing great violence to many passages of Scripture and without detracting from

God’s moral character...we may not like it (God’s wrath), but we should not ignore it... This is basic to our understanding of the Gospel. The Gospel According to John, pp. 249-250

ROUSAS JOHN RUSHDOONY, dealing with Proverb s 6:16-19:
Of the seven sins here cited, three are directly matters of speech, i.e., the “lying tongue,” the “false witness,” and “he that soweth discord among brethren.” As Delitzsch commented, the point made by Solomon is “that no vice is a greater abomination to God than the (in fact Satanical) striving to set men at variance who love one another...The chief of all that God hates is he who takes a fiendish delight in setting t variance men who stand nearly related.”
The Institutes of Biblical Law, Presbyterian and Reformed Pub. Co.),
p. 585

JONATHAN EDWARDS, eighteenth century revivalist preacher:
The God that holds you over the pit of hell, much in the same way one holds a spider, or some loathsome insect, over the fire, abhors you, and is dreadfully provoked; His wrath towards you burns like fire; He looks upon you as worthy of nothing else but to be cast into the fire: He is of purer eyes than to bear to have you in His sight; you are then thousand times more abominable in His sight than the most hateful venomous serpent is in ours.
Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, July 8, 1741, p. 17

NOTE: It is quite amazing that though these men may differ on many biblical positions, they all agree on this subject.

GOD’S LOVE IS CONDITIONAL

Proverbs 8:17
“I love those who love me; and those who diligently seek me will find me.

John 3:18
He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

John 16:27
for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me, and have believed that I came forth from the Father.

“And it came about that just as He called and they would not listen, so they called and I would not listen,” says the LORD of hosts;

John 14:23
Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him, and make Our abode with him.

John 15:10
“If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love; just as I have kept My Father’s commandments, and abide in His love.

II Chronicles 15:2

2 Sam 22:26-27
“With the kind Thou dost show thyself kind, with the blameless Thou dost show thyself blameless; 27) With the pure Thou dost show thyself pure, and with the perverted Thou dost show thyself astute.

C. F. KEIL and F. DELITZSCH, two German scholars, comment on II Samuel 22:26-27
The deliverance...is summed up briefly in ver. 25; and then in verses 26 and 27 it is carried back to the general truth, that the conduct of God towards men is regulated according to the conduct of men towards God...The truth that God treats every man in accordance with his conduct towards Him, is expounded in four parallel clauses...To the pious or devoted to God, He also shows Himself pious... (on the other hand) to show oneself perverse or crooked...(means God shows himself so towards the perverse, but giving him up to his perverseness.
Commentary On the Old Testament, Vol. 2, p. 477

This principle is again confirmed in their comment on Proverbs 3:34
Verse 34: His (God’s) relation to men is determined by their relation to Him.
Commentary On the Old Testament, Vol. 6, p. 102

What should the Christian attitude be toward workers of iniquity?

1. A desire to properly communicate God’s attitude towards them.

2. To follow, by example, the holy men of God as revealed in the Bible.

II Corinthians 5:11
But actually, I wrote to you not to associate with any so-called brother if he should be an immoral person, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or a swindler— not even to eat with such a one.

II Chronicles 19:2
And Jehu the son of Hanani the seer went out to meet him and said to King Jehoshaphat, “Should you help the wicked and love those who hate the LORD and so {bring} wrath on yourself from the LORD?

Hebrews 10:31
It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

Psalms 15:1-2, 4
O LORD, who may abide in Thy tent? Who may dwell on Thy holy hill? 2 He who walks with integrity, and works righteousness, and speaks truth in his heart. 3 He does not slander with his tongue, nor does evil to his neighbor, nor takes up a reproach against his friend; 4 In whose eyes a reprobate is despised, but who honors those who fear the LORD;

Proverbs 29:27
An unjust man is abominable to the righteous, and he who is upright in the way is abominable to the wicked.

Psalms 31:6
I hate those who regard vain idols; but I trust in the LORD.

Psalms 58:3- 6
The wicked are estranged from the womb; these who speak lies go astray from birth. 4) They have venom like the venom of a serpent; like a deaf
cobra that stops up its ear, 5) So that it does not hear the voice of charmers, {or} a skillful caster of spells. 6) O God, shatter their teeth in their mouth; break out the fangs of the young lions, O LORD.

Psalms 58:10-11
The righteous will rejoice when he sees the vengeance; He will wash his feet in the blood of the wicked. 11) And men will say, “Surely there is a reward for the righteous; surely there is a God who judges on earth!”

Psalms 119:113
I hate those who are double-minded, but I love Thy law.

Psalms 26:5
I hate the assembly of evildoers, and I will not sit with the wicked.

Psalms 139:21-24
Do I not hate those who hate Thee, O LORD? And do I not loathe those who rise up against Thee? 22) I hate them with the utmost hatred; they have become my enemies. 23) Search me, O God, and know my heart;
try me and know my anxious thoughts; 24) And see if there be any
hurtful way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way.

Psalms 97:10
Hate evil, you who love the LORD, who preserves the souls of His godly ones; He delivers them from the hand of the wicked.

Proverbs 8:13
“The fear of the LORD is to hate evil; pride and arrogance and the evil way, and the perverted mouth, I hate.

JOHN W. HALEY, Biblical apologist:
Prof. B. B. Edwards says in substance, that resentment against
evil-doers is so far from being sinful, that we find it exemplified in the meek and spotless Redeemer Himself (Mark 3:5).
If emotion and utterance were essentially sinful, how could Paul wish the enemy of Christ to be accursed (“anathema” I Cor. 16:22); or say to his own enemy, Alexander the coppersmith, “The Lord reward him according to his words” (II Tim. 4:14); and especially how could the spirits of the just in heaven call on God for vengeance (Rev. 6:10)?
Alleged Discrepancies of the Bible, P. 275

WILLIAM PERKINS (1558-1602), Bible expositor:
First, we must hate the company and society of manifest and obstinate sinners, who will not be reclaimed. Secondly...we must have no fellowship (as with the workers, so) with the unfruitful works of darkness. The Treasury of David, Vol. 6, p. 285

JOHN PETER LANGE, D. D. Bible commentator:
Verses 21, 22 “Should I not hate,” etc.? ...This question does not express uncertainty or doubt in the mind of the psalmist, but the most unshaken assurance that he is right in feeling thus. (Dr. Moll thus translates the verse: Should I not hate Thy haters, Jehovah, and abhor Thy adversaries? - J.F.M.) The extent of this feeling of hatred is expressed by a word which denotes the extreme end of an object with perfection of hatred J.F.M. Commentary on the Holy Scriptures, Psalms, Vol. 2, p. 949

MARTIN LUTHER, German theologian, leader of the German Reformation:...as the Psalm says (Ps. 139:22): “I hate them with perfect hatred.” And the first Psalm also calls the Christians blessed who avoid and separate themselves from the wicked... Whoever handles pitch will soil himself with it. Luther’s Works, Vol. 12, p. 193

A DICTIONARY OF CHRIST AND THE GOSPELS
There is a foolish affection which would do injury both to the giver and the receiver (cf. Prov. 13:34), and then hate is not only consistent with, but absolutely necessary for, the highest kind of love. It is “that element in love which makes a wise and Christian friend not for time only, but for eternity.” James Hastings, Editor, p. 705

MATTHEW POOLE, Bible expositor:
Ps. 139:21- I appeal to Thee, the omnipresent and omniscient God, whether I do not perfectly hate them so far as they are enemies to God and goodness “that rise up against Thee” in open hostility and rebellion against thine authority. Vs. 22 - I hate them with perfect hatred: I count them my enemies. I am no less grieved with their enmity against Thee than, if they directed it against myself. A Commentary on the Holy Bible, Vol. 2, p. 205

CICERO (106-43 B.C.), Roman statesman, orator, and Stoic
philosopher:
”Do not I hate them, O Lord, that hate Thee?” (Ps. 139:21) - Can he who thinks good faith the holiest thing in life, avoid being an enemy to that man who, as quaestor, dared to despoil, desert and betray? Can he who wishes to pay due honours to the immortal gods, by any means avoid being an enemy to that man who has plundered all their temples?
Quoted by Spurgeon’s, The Treasury of David, Vol. 6, p. 285

ALBERT BARNES, commenting on Psalms 139:21-
The Hebrew word used here (for “hate”), however, contains also the idea of being disgusted with; of loathing: of nauseating. The feeling referred to is anger - conscious disgust - at such conduct. The Treasury of David, Vol. 6, p. 285

THE BABYLONIAN TALMUD:
R. Ishmael said: ...If in order to make peace between man and wife the Torah decreed, Let My name, written in sanctity, be blotted out in water. These who stir up jealousy, enmity, and wrath between Israel and their Father in heaven, how much more so; and of them David said, Do not I hate them, O Lord, that hate thee? And am I not grieved with those that rise up against Thee? I hate them with perfect hatred; I count them my enemies.
Seder Mo’ed, Editir Rabbi Dr. I. Epstein, Vol. 2, p. 570

THE ANTE-NICENE FATHERS:
For we ought neither to run along with a thief, nor put in our lot with an adulterer; since holy David says: “O Lord, I have hated them that hate Thee, and I am withered away on account of Thy enemies, I hated them with a perfect hatred: they were to me as enemies.” And God reproaches Jehoshaphat with his friendship towards Ahab, and his league with him and with Ahaziah, by Jonah the prophet: “Art thou in friendship with a sinner? Or does thou aid him that is hated by the Lord? For this cause the wrath of the Lord would be upon thee suddenly.
The writings of the Fathers down to A.D. 325, Vol. 7, book IV, p. 458 The Apostolic Constitutions, Book VI, Sec. 3, para. xviii

JOHN CALVIN (1509-1564), French Protestant Reformer:
In declaring his (David’s) hatred of those who despised God, he virtually asserts thereby his own integrity, not as being free from all sin, but as being devoted to godliness...We thus see that he stood forward strenuously in defence of the glory of God..and waged war with all the workers of iniquity...David’s example should teach us to rise with lofty and bold spirit above all regard to the enmity of the wicked, when the question concerns the honor of God, and rather to renounce all earthly friendships than falsely pander with flattery to the favour of those who do everything to draw down upon themselves the divine displeasure.
Commentary on the Book of Psalms, Vol. 5, p. 222
