PASTOR X, I have some concerns in what happened that Sunday morning and also regarding the letter you sent to Edward, that I would like to address.

February 6, 1998

Dear PASTOR X:

I have been out of town so only recently have I read your January 19, 1998 letter to Edward Gathright. I have talked to Nathan Lawrence, and Ron Bartling and others on this matter.

I think it is my place to respond to you on this matter since I personally have made probably all the Christian Signs and Tee Shirts that were being used that Sunday Morning. I provide them for many of the Street preachers that may be encountered around this country and other nations around the world.

I also have been very instrumental in the training, guiding, and encouraging of many of the open air preachers over the last 25 to 30 years in various outreaches in the streets, at events and universities thoughout the United States and other countries.

First I would like to compliment you, for your congregation of 3000 members to have 40 that are able to bring the issue of the greatest sin that has ever existed on the planet earth into the public view state wide ( Most, Christians are apathetic about this issue.)

I am sure that you, your elders and staff were the first ones demonstrating at the Lovejoy clinic. Setting the example and encouraging the 40 and others, in a mighty stand against this sin:

so I would like to personally thank you and your staff in this effort. I believe you are to be commended as a bright light in the Greater Portland Area for the stand you have taken and I am quite sure the percentage of church members involved in this issue at your Church is much larger than most Churches: 40 out of 3000.

Point #1. First you did not need to write this letter.

Just who do you think you are to refer to God's elect in this way?

I guess I had better keep in mind Eph 4:1-3

OK, I also will try to, but you make me sick, and you with the responsibility that God has graciously bestowed on you with a fine mind and body and the blessing of a prominent Church and yet you refer to members of the Body of Christ in this way, you should be ashamed of yourself.

Have you forgotten the scriptures of First Corinthians 12:1-27, you should read them right now and think how they apply in this situation.

Have you ever attended a Bible Study with any of these men or went to lunch with them or visited them in their homes or in any way taken the time to get to know them?

I have and that's how I am in a position before God to say you are dead wrong. These men are not lonely, misguided, zealots, with a fixation on Hell. But what if they were, what should your attitude be in such a case?

We know there were Open Air Preachers in the Bible, Isa 29:21, Amos 5;10, Jer 11:6, 17:19-20, Matt 10:27, Acts 17:17.

Would you attempt to use your resources to train these mis-guided souls in how they could continue doing what God has called them to do but in a more effective way?

Would you encourage Leaders of Bible Schools and Seminaries and even Churches to promote the education and training of open air Preachers as you had opportunities? You certainly are in a position to do so.

I have to wonder whether you are more sold out to the image of the Pro-life movement then the image that reflects the men of the Bible. I think I am qualified to ask the question since I am not biased but am pro-life and have been active in the movement for far more than 20 years, arrested and jailed more than once, taking every opportunity that comes my way to speak against it and have been doing so consistently, long before you and ones like you awoke to the issue.

Point #2. I have attended your Church, eaten a meal while sitting next to you and talked with you just within this last year. I know your Church is filled with educated Christians with good names in the community. To have "hundreds that have come to know Christ in the last 18 months is wonderful!"

But for you not to identify with the message and the messengers that came that Sunday morning is deplorable and shows you have missed the mark in your understanding of God and His message and messengers.

Yet that should be no surprise to any sold out man of God. Religious people have consistently been doing that from day one.

2 Chronicles 36:15-16 And the LORD, the God of their fathers, sent word to them again and again by His messengers, because He had compassion on His people and on His dwelling place; but they continually mocked the messengers of God, despised His words and scoffed at His prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against His people, until there was no remedy.

Your Church was given to you for the promotion of the gospel, the building of disciples and the sending of disciples out into the world with the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.

So for you to be more concerned with the church image in light of the pro-life movement rather than to reflect the teachings of Jesus Christ is a disgrace.

"There is a time and a place for your tactics." If in fact the Preachers singled out your church for a demonstration painted up signs placed them on their autos and personage just to confront your church and attempted to convert you or influence you into their application of Christianity, causing disunity within the body of Christ, I would have to stand against them, and support you. But with these men that's not the case. This is a way of life for them. They wear these shirts at their places of employment. Use their vehicles for their businesses and go wherever God calls them to go to preach His word and reflect His will.

The fact they showed up at a Christian Church with many of the same shirts and signs they wear and use on a daily basis to communicate the most important message of all time was not done in a spirit of hostility toward you or your Church but of brotherhood in a means to help stand against some very ungodly attacks toward you, your church and the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. The fact that they were not received as who they are in light of God's calling on their lives by you and your Churchmen is a violation on your part and violates many verses in the Bible. For example: 1 Corinthians 13.

Point #3. "one picture is worth a thousand words." This is precisely why we use the methods we do on shirts, banners, and signs, in using them we are able to capture the minds of many, whether they want to be exposed to the Gospel message or not.

We are able to provoke thinking and cause people to make decisions.

If somehow you think you are more intelligent or more qualified in these matters than we are, along with Coca Cola, Ford Motor Co., please let me know. Thousands of business, organizations, and politicians, have been using these methods effectively for hundred of years. They have proven them successful in promoting their products, persons, and issues. So open your mind and realize God can work, beyond your strategies.

And the message you delivered to the picketers and the public was largely accusatory. Its sad, I have to take time out to attempt to instruct, the one that flaunts Dr. before his name. JESUS CHRIST is the primary source of revelation about the reality of Hell. The fact that Edward and others at times reflect His teaching on this subject, attempting to communicate what Jesus has said, is exactly what Jesus was try to accomplish. Hell is not something any of us like to think about but is the future reality that most people will experience.

The work of these men to preach the reality of Hell's existence, offering a way of escape, is not accusatory but an act of divine love and kindness toward their fellowman. The exception would be if you classify Jesus' words as accusatory. If that be the case, I would ask the question, "What's wrong with that?"

Matthew 10:28 "And do not fear those who kill the body, but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

On that Sunday With some of the most evil people that have ever lived on the planet earth promoting the greatest single sin that has ever occurred short of the crucifixion of Christ, what was your message? GOD LOVES YOU! ???

If you tell an unsaved, unrepentant person that God personally loves him WHEN HE REALLY DOES NOT, it becomes a serious crime against the very character of God Himself. I believe this offense is committed by Christian people on a regular basis to the non-Christian world. Our language has one word for "love", whereas the Greek language has many words for "love". There are different types of love in the Greek language, but in our language we adapted the meaning for only one of these words, meaning personal affection (PHILEO), and have applied it across the board.

The love in John 3:16 is AGAPE, it is not affectionate at all. So the words should be explained, when telling someone God loves them, when they're thinking personally and affectionately, and God is not.

If a man responds to John 3:16 (love which is void of any experiential relationship), he will experience God's PHILE0 love. But if he does not respond to it (the Cross) he will continue to be under condemnation and wrath.

Technically speaking a person could force John 3:16 to make it look like God personally loves the sinner. But even in this attempt the quality of this love is of absolutely no practical or personal value to the unredeemed sinner. Other than providing air for him to breathe and the option for him to repent of his sins and trust in Jesus,

Taking the urgency out of a lost person's deprived state before God, and making a person think God looks favorably towards him when He does not, attacks the Person, and Gods Nature and His Word.

WHAT SHOULD BE THE CHRISTIAN ATTITUDE REGARDING WORKERS OF INIQUITY? (A desire to properly communicate God's attitude towards them.)

LAYMAN"S BIBLE COMMENTARY, Arnold B. Rhodes, pp. 33-34 God's Hatred of Evildoers (Psalms 5:4-5)... God is not said to love the sinner and hate his sin; he is said to hate both the sinner and his sin. This sounds harsh to modern Christian ears, but there is truth here we dare not overlook.

GERHARD KITTEL'S THEOLOGICAL DICTIONARY OF THE NEW TESTAMENT: God's Hating. The OT concept of God includes the fact that God can and does hate...God is hostile both to the sinner and his sin. O. MICHEL, Greek Scholar Vol. 4, p. 686

AUGUSTUS HOPKINS STRONG, Systematic Theologian: pp. 290-291 There is no abstract sin that can be hated apart from the persons in whom that sin is represented and embodied... "It is the sinner who is punished, not the sin."

Now just who do you think this verse is talking about if not people promoting the murder of innocent unborn babes?

Nahum 1:2 A jealous and avenging God is the LORD; The LORD is avenging and wrathful. The LORD takes vengeance on His adversaries, And He reserves wrath for His enemies.

2 Corinthians 5:11 Therefore knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade men, but we are made manifest to God; and I hope that we are made manifest also in your consciences.

Hebrews 10:31 It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

John 3:36 "He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him."

I could go on and on but by now you should get the point.

Proverbs 17:15 He who justifies the wicked, and he who condemns the righteous, Both of them alike are an abomination to the LORD.

2 Timothy 3:1-5 But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; and avoid such men as these. (That's what you did, denied the power - which is the Gospel Message!)

1 Corinthians 1:18 For the word of the cross is to those who are perishing foolishness, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

Redemption presupposes a need as does the concept of a Savior. Saved from what?

Is the heart of the Gospel.

And you should know and support that message. Jesus is the Savior from SIN AND HELL.

But it appears that you are ashamed of that message...

Romans 1:14-16 I am under obligation both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to the wise and to the foolish.
Thus, for my part, I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome.
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

I am sure you mention these things behind closed doors, to Christians that already accept what you are saying, but like the guys in the Bible do you take the message out into the streets and put your own life at risk out of love, to alert the unsaved of the plight that is before them?

Well, if you say "No, that's not my ministry." Then don't find fault with those that God has raised up to do that very thing! Indeed these should be the 1st recipients of your support , prayers and coffee and donuts... these who are following the rich heritage of those who have come before!

2 Timothy 4:2-3 preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires;

The word for ''preaching" in the New Testament has the following meanings: In the New Testament...the word (for preaching)...does not mean the delivery of a learned and edifying discourse in well chosen words and a pleasant voice. It is the declaration of an event.

Kittle's Theological Dictionary of the New Testament, Vol. 3, p. 703 It always carries the meaning of: to cry out aloud ..... to announce to proclaim ..... to implore someone to declare ..... (ibid, p. 703) The compound verb for "preaching" means: to speak forth to declare publicly to set forth audibly (ibid, p.717) (See also Websters with the attendent synonyms)

We are to preach with boldness! As a noun the word for "bold" in the New Testament means:
freedom of speech unreservedness in utterance to speak plainly to speak without fear to secure publicity W.E. Vine, An Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words, p.137

That message went out to hundreds of thousands of unsaved Hell bound people. (For Free) Would you have preferred a picture of yourself handing some homosexual promoting abortion, a cup of coffee and a donut?

Edward and the others attempted to warn the wicked which is consistent with...

Ezekiel 3:18-19 "When I say to the wicked, 'You shall surely die'; and you do not warn him or speak out to warn the wicked from his wicked way that he may live, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at your hand. "Yet if you have warned the wicked, and he does not turn from his wickedness or from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but you have delivered yourself. also ...EZ 33:6-9 ACTS 18:6 20:26

Your act of using authority to force Nathan Lawrence to park his auto with the Gospel Signs on it, way back in the rear parking lot, so no one could read the Gospel message on it, and also requesting Ron Bartling and others to button up their coats so no one could read the Gospel Message on their shirts, is an abomination before God.

Repent Now, you poor sick man and avoid God's judgment on you! The Gospel: declares all the truths, precepts, promises, and threatenings of Christianity.

The Holy Spirit's Ministry is clear... John 16:8-11 "And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin, and righteousness, and judgment; concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me; and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you no longer behold Me; and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.

He does His work through born again Bible Believers.

Now, just who was more in tune with the ministry of the Holy Spirit that Sunday morning, Edward and the Street Preachers or you and the Donut Peddlers?

Point #4. "The local Church is the very backbone of Christ's plan." Yes, I agree that might have been the plan, but the plan got off to a rough start. One evidence to that is found in the book of Revelation chapters 2-3, since then it hasn't been a whole lot better. The incredible amount of tears, heart breaks, dissension, anger, broken relationships, controversies, torture and murder etc. has probably never existed in any other organization on earth.

The very opposite of the teaching of Jesus Christ. Most of which has been caused by well meaning educated sincere Christian Men and Women that feel their agenda and insight with God is superior to others and attempt to use their positions of power to cause divisions and separation with those that disagree with them, just like you did that Sunday morning.

Praise the Lord in spite of people like us Gods gloriously works and his wonderful plan of redemption goes on. It first requires a person to come to the realization that he is in a position of need, the result of his nature and sin. He must realize that without Jesus his future will be eternal separation from God in Hell. Only through Jesus can he cry out for the hope of salvation. It is at this moment in time God becomes a comforter within him through the person of the Holy Spirit until He goes through the process of "purification" or Death.

That is the message of the street preacher. The Gospel Message is coming in the front door rather than the normal church approach of coming in the back door.

The mentality of the church should be that of the Street Preacher... To tell the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth. With all Boldness Eph 6:19

That is certainly not where you are coming from, evidenced by your letter.

I have a high regard for the local church in spite of its present condition. For example if it was functioning correctly do you really believe our country would be in the condition it is in? Most street preachers I have ever known attend various local churches and its amazing when we get together and compare notes we find most churches are suffering from the same sickness regardless of the denomination.

The local churches are in a sick state primarily as a result of people like you and your staff. The local church mentality is like that of their members for the most part: self centered, impersonal, with a worldly businessman mentality. Products of the current day cult of the intellect, that love to be entertained. People that do not want to deal personally with Sin, Judgment, Hell, or their personal responsibility in light of the great commission. They interpret Gods Word as negatives or accusatory, all because they have chosen to caress a God they have created in their own minds that for the most part requires nothing from them but to enjoy life in their inter personal church relationships. On top of all this their leaders, just love this kind of churchianity that causes no sparks, no waves, keeps everyone happy, and keeps the money flowing in, so they get their pay checks. Jer 5:31

Most Christians on the Church payroll have probably never had a real job. If they did have to work at a secular job full time, they would probably drop their ministry in a New York minute. Do you seriously expect the Street Preachers to submit to people like this?

Street Preachers work regular jobs and use their off time and resources wisely so they can represent the God of the Bible to a lost and dying world. They do this out of appreciation for what God has done for them, saving them from Hell. People like you place little or no value on Street Preachers or their message.

Do you know or have you ever heard of a street preacher that has been supported or encouraged by a local church? This all is in spite of the fact that Jesus himself was a street preacher. The greatest man that ever lived according to Jesus was John the Baptist who was a street Preacher.

Most every example of a Man of God in the Bible was a Street Preacher, the two witnesses in the future that God will use in the Book of Revelations are street preachers. Most revivals started with street preacher, etc.

The sad thing is, if any of the guys in the Bible were to have supernaturally appeared that Sunday morning you probably would have treated them the same way you treated Edward...O until you found out who they were, then you would have attempted to exploit them for the benefit of your image and Church identity.

WHO IS THE AUTHORITY ? I believe if the intent of the street preachers were to enter your local church meeting house they should subject themselves to the hopefully God appointed elders. That clearly was not their intent.

If you have never played football and do not understand the game it is a little hard to become an effective coach.

It was outside the church meeting they were commissioned, with the intent of brotherly love to assist you in the ungodly attack against you, and the unborn, but since you were so spiritually sick not to receive them or their Godly Bible Centered Message they chose to remove themselves from your property and carry on with the outreach they were called to do that day.

They did observe as did the newspaper your tent, coffee and donuts, did not go over to well with the children of the devil. This indicates your worldly method was ineffective but Gods method captured the minds of hundred of thousands of people via Edward.

In regard to whose authority takes precedence it appears that the pastors (elders) teachers seem to be the low men on the totem pole. 1Co 12:28 And God has appointed in the church, first apostles, second prophets, third teachers,...

Ephesians 4:11-12 And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers,...

Note: If you see something that looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, there is nothing wrong with calling it a Duck.

It can be traced in the Epp. of St. Paul and in other parts of the NT. It is seen in the Didache, in the Pastor of Hermas, in the Epp. of Barnabas, in the apology of Justin Martyr, in the writings of Irenaeus and elsewhere. (For a full list of authorities, cf Harnack, Texte u. Untersuchungen, 11,ii,111ff.)

The one ministry differs from the other in function, and the distinction depends on a conception to be afterward examined--that of "gifts." The common name, in apostolic and sub-apostolic literature, for the members of the one kind of ministry is "those who speak the Word of God" (laluntes ton logon tou Theou). Modern writers have called it the charismatic, but perhaps the better term is the prophetic ministry; while to the other class belong all the names which are given to denote office-bearers in the local churches. The two existed side by side. The great practical distinction between them was that the members of the former were in no sense office-bearers in any one Christian community; they were not elected or appointed to any office; they were not set apart for duties by any ecclesiastical ceremony. The "Word" came to them and they were compelled by inward compulsion to speak the message given them to deliver. Some were wanderers ; others confined themselves to their own community.

They were responsible to no ecclesiastical authority. Churches were encouraged to test them and their message; for the "gift" of discerning whether a so-called prophet spoke a truly Divine message was always presupposed to be within the local church. But once accepted they took a higher place than the office bearers, they presided at the Lord's Supper, and their judgment in cases of discipline could overbear ordinary ecclesiastical rules.

I do not think, like you, that authority is the issue,
I think attitude is the issue.
Love is the issue.
Respect is the issue.
The Gospel is the issue.
Repentance is the issue.

The issue is, in spite of your overwhelming desire to present coffee, donuts, and covering, along with your effeminate concept of God and the Gospel, to the homosexual perverts promoting the murder of the innocent unborn, you could have extended as much love, compassion, and understanding to these fearless ambassadors for the King of Kings and Lord of Lord, that are your brothers.

PROVERBS 29:27 An unjust man is abominable to the righteous, and he who is upright in the way is abominable to the wicked.

We as Preachers have always been rejected by the saved and the unsaved regardless of where we preach. The men of God historically certainly preached at and in religious houses of worship, unannounced and uninvited, their messages were rejected by the religious people of the day, just like you did to the Preachers.

The body of Christ, (across denomination lines) has constructed an aberration to the teaching of the Bible, that will not allow the Great Commission to go forth, other than in a limited way.

The church has created a system that does not allow its members to exhale what they have inhaled (with few exceptions).

Excitement about Jesus comes as a result of being active.

Point #5. I would be more than happy to get together with you or any one else at any time at any place with the hope to resolve these matters.

Who has an anniversary week where he won't answer questions or talk about the Bible, followed by three weeks of vacation whereas the same is true.
